Rescue dogs become “perfect additions” to police team
Two rescue dogs adopted from Cardiff Dog's Home have found a new life sniffing out crime for South Wales Police.
Cocker spaniel, Max, and collie spaniel cross, Chase, completed their training to detect drugs, cash and firearms residue over a period of six weeks.
They are now ready for operational deployment after being licensed as part of the South Wales Police dog's section on July 16.
Max was brought in as a stray and showed early signs of intelligence, focus, and energy — traits that caught the attention of Cardiff Dog's Home.
Chase, a collie/spaniel cross, came from an unwanted litter and was taken in at just nine weeks old by his handler, who immediately saw his potential.
Sergeant Nathan Burton said: "Max and Chase are fantastic examples of how rescue dogs, given the right guidance, can achieve incredible things. Their determination, loyalty, and instinct make them perfect additions to our police dog team.
"Our dog handlers and instructors put in an incredible amount of time, skill and dedication to train these dogs. Their hard work is vital in preparing these dogs to support frontline policing and keep our communities safe."
Cardiff Dogs Home facilitated both dogs' initial rescue and rehoming and the home’s manager, Maria Bailie, said: "Max and Chase's achievements show the huge difference that matching the right dogs to the right homes can make to their lives.
“Although they both found themselves in our care for different reasons, they both clearly needed a job to keep them happy and mentally stimulated,” adding that the dogs found “exciting” careers and “happy, caring homes”.
Cardiff Dogs Home is located on Penarth Road and more information can be found here.
