Men in Cardiff are being offered a prostate cancer test this weekend.
The testing day is taking place at Glamorgan County Cricket Club, Sophia Gardens, on May 11 from 9am to 4pm.
Organised by charity Prostate Cymru, it is part of a wider campaign to test over 3,000 men across Wales.
Previous events have been held in Kenfig Hill, Cowbridge, Brecon and Swansea with more than 1,400 men having been tested.
The charity is offering tests as many men report difficulties accessing a free prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test through their GP - despite being eligible.
Men aged 50 and over qualify for a free test and that lowers to 45 for people who are Black or have a family history of prostate cancer.
Alan Peterson OBE, who was diagnosed in 2022, is sponsoring the Cardiff event.
He said: “I did have some symptoms but men often don’t which is why it’s so important to go and get yourself tested. I do know of men who have been refused a PSA test by their GP but it’s really important to persist.”
Tina Tew of Prostate Cymru says: “The evidence tells us that if we could make it easier for men to get tested, more men would welcome a test.
“The Glamorgan Cricket event will be our fifth testing event and we’ve received so much feedback from men, whether that’s from those who now know they need to visit their GP for follow-up tests or from those who now have peace of mind.”
Specialist nurses and consultants will be present on the day to answer questions and explain next steps in the event of a positive result.
Future events are scheduled for:
• Sunday 18 May – Carmarthen Athletic Club
• Sunday 1 June – Narberth RFC
• Sunday 8 June – Aberystwyth RFC
Attendees are invited to donate £10 if they are able.
