Lansdowne Primary School received a positive report following an Estyn inspection

A primary school in Canton received a positive report following an inspection by education watchdog Estyn earlier this year.

Lansdowne Primary School on Norfolk Street was described as “nurturing and inclusive environment” after inspectors visited in January 2025.

At that time, the school had 320 pupils and was also recognised for its “diverse curriculum” and “strong relationships” between staff and pupils which contribute to a positive learning environment.

The report also states that reading is a strength, with younger pupils developing a secure understanding of phonics and older pupils demonstrating strong comprehension and critical thinking skills. The provision for pupils with additional learning needs was also commended.

Estyn made three recommendations which include:

  • Improving the teaching of mathematics and providing more opportunities for pupils to apply their numeracy skills in real-life contexts

  • Providing more opportunities for pupils to respond to feedback and influence their learning

  • Addressing the level of persistent absence to ensure all pupils benefit fully from their education

Lansdowne Primary School headteacher Michelle Jones said:"We work tirelessly to make a difference and ensure our pupils make meaningful progress in an inclusive and diverse environment, where well-being and relationships are at the heart of everything we do.

“We will continue to strive to do our best, ensuring that we meet the needs of all our learners and build on the positives identified in our report."

Labour Cllr Sarah Merry, cabinet member for education, said: "The school should feel proud of the positive feedback from Estyn's inspection which shines a light on the dedicated staff, supportive parents, and enthusiastic pupils who have all contributed to creating a vibrant and inclusive school community."
