Plans for 20m telephone mast in Pontcanna

Cardiff Council has received a planning application for a phone mast to be built in Pontcanna.

EE Ltd has applied for planning permission to erect a 20m pole in Pontcanna Fields pay and display car park.

The planning documents state that the mast, along with other equipment such as antennas and dishes, would provide EE customers with 4G technology and then 5G at a later date.

The documents add: “This mast is to cover an extensive amount of customer complaints regarding coverage and/or capacity in this area which results in dropped calls, delayed messages and poor to non-existent data usage at this area.”

It continues to explain that the location was chosen as the site “is away from the residential properties in what is largely a residential area”, has a “good level of existing vegetation” to provide “screening” and is near to “a number of commercial properties”.

Cllr Leonora Thomson, who represents Riverside Ward, wrote to the applicant and said: “Thank you for consulting us about the proposed telecoms apparatus. I welcome this development as better phone signal is much needed in the area, and this is a good place for it.”

The application is out for consultation until 25 March.

You can read the full application on the council’s planning website using the reference 25/00520/PRAP
